DIY // CLAY FACE DISH

Store jewellery in style with a DIY minimal clay abstract face dish!

Since making my wire face earrings, I’ve been noticing abstract faces on everything from cushions to art prints. It’s a big trend right now, and good news, these faces look best kept simple and minimal, which means they’re pretty easy to duplicate! I’ve been feeling pretty stir crazy the past week, so whilst waiting for some bits to arrive for my next project, I had a look through my craft supplies and came across an unopened pack of air-dry clay. I’ve not used air dry clay for such a long time, and haven’t used DAS clay for even longer. It was so easy to use, and I found it’s malleability and consistency a joy to work with. I love a good ring dish, and they’re so easy to make. The only problem with this dish is that it’s just too cute to cover up by storing anything in it, so don’t count on using this to help you stay more tidy! Air-dry clay

Craft knife

Acrylic roller

First of all, work a ball of clay in your hands to warm it slightly and then roll it out onto a plastic surface or tile. Roll out the clay until it’s your desired thickness and diameter.

Take something circular that is the diameter that you want your dish to be, and place this on your rolled out clay. Cut around this using a craft knife. Put clingfilm on the inside of a bowl, and place your circle of clay in this. Press it down to ensure that it takes the shape of the bowl.

Take some more clay and roll this out into long thin tubes. You’ll need one long piece for the eyebrow/nose, one medium length for the lips and one short piece for the eye. The length of these will depend on the size of your dish and how large you want your features to be!

Using some water, stick the long tube to the clay circle, creating an eyebrow and nose. Fold the medium piece in half, pinch this fold and pinch the two ends together. These are the lips - again stick to the clay circle using water. Using the short tube, create a gentle u-shape, and stick under the eyebrow to create a closed eye. Use a paintbrush to perfect the position of the features.

Leave your dish to dry overnight. Once dry, sand the edges and the underside to make sure it’s nice and smooth. Brush off any dust and give a quick spray of white acrylic paint to finish it off.
