Minimal Dowel Christmas Tree

December 8, 2021 Isoscella M

Add some festive spirit to your walls with this minimal dowel Christmas tree

Christmas is my absolute favourite time of year. I love the sparkle, the fairy lights, the cosiness, the films… everything! And so I’m always VERY keen to get the Christmas decorations out and up so that the Christmas period starts in my house as soon as possible. I always marvel at the houses you see in films and on social media that seem to have every room decorated. We couldn’t manage it in a flat and so there’s no way we can manage it in a house, but this year I thought I’d bring some festive spirit to our office / games room with a minimal and scandi-inspired hanging dowel Christmas tree. If you fancy making one yourself, keep reading for the step by step instructions!

1.

Use a wood saw to cut your dowel to length. I used an 18mm pine dowel which I cut down to 4 different lengths. In the end, I only used three of the lengths I cut.

2.

Use sand paper to neaten up the edges and to ensure the dowels are nice and smooth.

3.

Next, chose your colour wood stain and apply a coat with a paintbrush. Leave for 10 minutes and then wipe off any excess. Repeat this a second time once dry.

4.

Use your string, thread or rope, to tie one end of the shortest dowel to the other. Make sure you use excess string so that you can use this string to hang your whole tree up. Use hot glue to secure the string in place at the back. I secured my string approximately 1cm from the end of each dowel.

5.

Secure the next slightly longer dowel the shortest using two lengths of string. Tie these so that the dowels will hang approximately 10cm apart and secure with hot glue at the back.

6.

Repeat step 5 with all the dowels so that all of your dowels are connected with approximately the same distance between and with the shortest dowel at the top and longest at the bottom.

7.

Using the string at the top and a command hook, hang your tree and decorate however you like. I kept mine mininal with fairy lights and a couple of small baubles.

…AND THAT’S IT!
